COMMON QUESTIONS

Don't worry, I get asked these a lot!

DO YOU OFFER GROUP SESSIONS?

Yes, of course. If you would prefer to book a group session with friends then just email me direct to chat about your needs. I can offer sessions for up to five people.

WHAT IF I'M NERVOUS ABOUT OPEN WATER?

You're definitely not alone! Open water is an exciting and magical place to swim, but as a new environment it can also create nerves. We can talk through these common worries and help you find the tools and confidence to overcome them.

CAN I PURCHASE/RENT EQUIPMENT?

Let me know in advance what you need, as I do have some spare kit and accessories which I can loan you. I can also help with advice on wetsuit purchases.

DO I HAVE TO BE A GREAT SWIMMER?

No, absolutely not! Swimmers of all abilities can enjoy open water and whether you want to have a gentle dip for the mental health benefits or are keen to smash it out for an upcoming race, I can tailor a session just for you. I would just ask that you can swim 200m in the pool (any stroke) and can tread water before booking a session in open-water.

WHAT KIT DO I NEED TO BRING WITH ME?

You don't needs loads of fancy kit! In the warmer months a swimsuit or jammers, as well as a brightly-coloured swim cap and goggles, are the basics. A tow-float is also a good idea for safety. If you want to do a longer swim/race or feel the cold then a wetsuit is a good investment and in cooler water gloves, booties and a neoprene hat.

CAN YOU HELP ME TRAIN FOR A SPECIFIC RACE?

I've competed in most conditions so can share my tips and experience. If you have a goal in mind then drop me an email and we can chat about whether a session with me is what you are looking for. I'm happy to share contacts for local technique coaches or coaches with other areas of specialism too. (Disclaimer... I've never swum the Channel!)

Booking T&Cs

To join me for an open-water coaching session I ask that you can swim at least 25m in the pool (any stroke, however slowly!) and can confidently float and tread water. Open-water coaching is not for non-swimmers (though I can recommend pool swim teachers if you are a complete beginner). You will need a brightly-coloured swim hat and a tow float for safety. (Tow floats are a great bit of kit so I'd really recommend one and have some for sale if you need one, or have a limited number to loan out on the day for beginners).

If you need to cancel or reschedule a 1-2-1 or workshop session I ask for 24 hours' notice and I'll issue you with a refund or change the time/date of your session. Contact me asap if you can't make it and I'll try to fill your place
so you can defer/receive a refund. Life happens!

If you are poorly, please let me know asap. Swimming in cold water put extra stress on your body and isn't advised if you are not well. I will send out a pre-session form to capture your emergency contact details and to find out about any pre-existing health conditions you may have or you can follow the link here to complete it. Please never arrive to a session after drinking alcohol or under the influence of other substances which may affect your safety in open water.

Cromhall Quarry is a deep water venue with no shallow end and there are hazards within the site such as loose rocks to be aware of. Please follow all safety advice and instructions carefully when on-site and be respectful of our amazing water safety team, who are there to help you stay safe and enjoy your visit.

If you are nervous about anything then please do drop me an email or call me so we can talk it through. I want all my swimmers to feel excited about their session and to enjoy it once they are with us!

I include lake entry (usually £6 at SWMA) in your session price. Please pay either in advance online (details will be emailed to you when you book) or by cash on the day – either is fine.

I'm looking forward to meeting you!
